The release of the upcoming action RPG Zenless Zone Zero (ZZZ) by Hoyoverse is imminent, so with the anticipation building let’s explore the world and lore that this apocalyptic universe has to offer.
This post will dive into the unique setting, major locations, key events and characters of ZZZ. I hope you are looking forward to the game as much as I am!
World of Zenless Zone Zero
ZZZ is set in the futuristic city of New Eridu, the last stronghold of human civilization following the mysterious disasters known as Hollows.
Hollows are known as apocolyptic-level disasters, an abnormal dimension which appears out of thin air.
The inside of these Hollows are disorderly but the reason as to why is unknown and within these Hollows reside monsters known as Ethereals.
New Eridu has managed to survive in this dangerous and mysterious world due to its mastering of technology which aid in its coexistence with the Hollows.
Major Locations
New Eridu
As previously mentioned New Eridu serves as the main central hub of civilization and where we as players will find ourselves operating in.
It will serve as the home and main base for the characters and missions/quests.
Hollows
As mentioned prior within Hollows live the Ethereals, which are the dangerous monsters that roam inside.
So why exactly would we even want to explore Hollows?
This is because despite the danger Hollows are ripe with Ether, a valuable but hazardous resource which is used to power New Eridu.
Key Events
Emergence of Hollows
The sudden appearance of Hollows across the world marked the beginning of a new era after these supernatural disasters wiped out what is now known as the “old civilization”.
These events are what led New Eridu to being what it is presently.
Ether and Corruption
Ether, the substance found in Hollows, is a double edged sword. While it provides the energy to power New Eridu, its use poses risks, such as the chance of corruption.
Corruption being when those exposed to Ether transform into the monstrous beings known as Ethereals.
Our Role in ZZZ
We the player’s will control either Belle or Wise, codenamed “Phaethon”, who operate as Proxies hidden behind the front of a video store.
As Proxies, they aid in navigating Hollow Raiders who enter the Hollows for a variety of reasons.
